1994 – 2018

I have two distinct sets of memories about Aunt Cely – growing up, I thought of her as one of the most adventurous and fearless women I knew, raising her four children in far flung places and effortlessly crossing oceans by boat and plane to join us in Jalmolonga and San Diego. As I grew older, and having spent a high school summer at her home in McClean, I grew to know her as kind, unassuming, and generous – which didn’t totally square with my first impression of her as bold and full of steely resolve. Now I know that the gentle affection and considerateness she displayed to all of us was a part of her fundamental caring and love for us and for the world around her. I admired that much of her adult life was spent fighting for conservation of the natural world. She has taught me you can live a life full of adventure and altruism!
